A micron, sometimes written as mic on our website, is a unit used to measure thickness. One micron is equal to one thousandth of a millimetre (0.001mm).
For example, a plastic shopping bag may be around 50 microns thick.
At instantprint, we use microns to describe the thickness of some of our plastic, PVC and synthetic print materials, as well as certain sign and display products. The higher the micron value, the thicker the material.
Which instantprint products are measured in microns?
We use micron measurements across several product categories, including the following:
Posters
220mic waterproof PVC: A flexible, waterproof option suitable for indoor and outdoor posters.
400mic heavyweight waterproof PVC: A thicker, tear-resistant option that's easy to wipe clean and suitable for longer-term outdoor use.
These PVC stocks are available on selected large-format poster sizes, including A2, A1, A0 and several large-format inch sizes.
Banners and exhibition displays
Roller banners: Check the individual product specifications for the material used, as the banner graphic and cassette are different components.
PVC banners: Our 440gsm PVC banner material is described by its weight in GSM, rather than microns.
Exhibition displays: Some display materials, including PVC/latex hybrid stock, are specified in microns. Our paper guide lists a 500mic PVC/latex hybrid material for exhibition stands.
Signs and pavement displays
A-frame pavement signs: Supplied with two waterproof 220-micron PVC posters.
Cardboard signs: Made from 2000mic cardboard, a thick and sturdy alternative to paper posters.
Other sign materials: Correx, foam and aluminium signs use different material specifications, so check the individual product page for details.
Waterproof and reusable print
Waterproof synthetic print: Our paper guide lists a 200mic waterproof synthetic material designed for repeated cleaning and reuse, making it suitable for products such as reusable menus.
Waterproof stickers and labels: Material specifications vary by product and application. Check the individual product page for the exact stock details.
What's the difference between microns and GSM?
Microns measure thickness, while GSM means grams per square metre and measures the weight of a material per unit of area. They aren't interchangeable: a material with a higher GSM doesn't necessarily have a higher micron value.
For example, our 440gsm PVC banners are specified in GSM, while our waterproof posters are available in 220mic and 400mic PVC.
Where can I find the material specifications for a product?
